Back off sets zijn niets anders dan een aantal sets met lichte gewichten en veel herhalingen achter een serie van zware gewichten en weinig herhalingen. Instinctief voer ik dit al langere tijd uit en vind nu pas het bewijs dat dit voordelig is.

 

Soms worden één of meer "back off" sets met hoge herhalingen en lichte belasting uitgevoerd na een reeks van sets met lage herhalingen en zwaardere gewichten.

Hoewel deze methode niet zo vaak voor komt, het is alleen onderzocht in één of twee studies, lijkt het zeer effectief voor het gelijktijdig produceren van een grotere winst in kracht, grootte en (vooral) spierkracht te zijn.

In feite zijn de voordelen al duidelijk zichtbaar na slechts 4 weken, bij gebruik van één "back off" set na een zware training.
